Early Life and Military Roots


Born in 1981 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi hails from a family with deep military roots. Her grandfather served as a religious teacher in the Indian Army, and her father, Taj Mohammed Qureshi, was a subedar in the Border Security Force. This legacy of service profoundly influenced her, instilling a sense of duty and patriotism from a young age.



Sofiya completed her schooling at Loreto Convent, Lucknow, and pursued a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1993. Despite her technical background, she chose to follow in her family's footsteps and joined the Indian Army in 1999. Commissioned into the Army Signal Corps, she embarked on a career that would see her rise through the ranks, breaking barriers along the way.

In 2015, Sofiya married Colonel Tajuddin Bagewadi, a fellow officer in the Indian Army. Tajuddin, hailing from Konnur village in Karnataka's Belagavi district, had a background steeped in military tradition. Their relationship blossomed during their service, culminating in a love-cum-arranged marriage. The couple's union is a harmonious blend of personal affection and shared commitment to the nation.

They are parents to two children: an 18-year-old son, Sameer, who aspires to join the Indian Armed Forces, and a daughter, Hanima, who also harbors dreams of serving the nation. Balancing demanding military careers and family life, Sofiya and Tajuddin exemplify the strength of their partnership and dedication to both their profession and family. 



Professional Milestones and Achievements


Colonel Qureshi's career is marked by several pioneering accomplishments. In 2016, she became the first woman officer to lead an Indian contingent at the ASEAN Plus Multinational Military Exercise 'Force 18', where she was the sole female commander among representatives from 18 countries. 


Her contributions extend to international peacekeeping efforts. In 2006, she was deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. During her six-year tenure, she played a pivotal role in maintaining peace in volatile regions and facilitating humanitarian aid. 

In 2025, Colonel Qureshi gained national prominence when she briefed the media on 'Operation Sindoor', India's military response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Her poised and authoritative presence underscored the increasing role of women in leadership positions within the armed forces.
