Natasha Ponawalla Performance of Met Gala 2025
At the 2025 Met Gala, Natasha Poonawalla captivated audiences with a stunning ensemble that seamlessly blended Indian heritage with avant-garde fashion. Draped in a custom creation by Manish Malhotra, she paid homage to her Parsi roots through intricate Gara embroidery, bringing traditional craftsmanship to one of fashion's most prestigious stages.
The centerpiece of her outfit was a sculpted fishtail skirt, meticulously crafted from two vintage Parsi Gara saris—one of which was over a century old. These heirloom textiles, adorned with hand-embroidered motifs of flora and fauna, showcased the rich legacy of Parsi artisanship. Complementing the skirt was a corset-cummerbund paired with a vintage French lace bralette, edged in scalloped pearls, embodying the essence of dandyism—a fusion of structured form and understated luxury.
Adding a regal touch, Poonawalla donned a sharply tailored black Gara jacket with bold shoulders and an imperial purple lining, aligning with the event's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." A sculptural lace cravat by Atelier Biser and a miniature Chanel pearl-trimmed box bag completed the look, infusing theatricality and elegance.
Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, also of Parsi heritage, the ensemble was more than a fashion statement—it was a cultural narrative. Ashdeen Lilaowala, a respected Gara designer, praised Poonawalla for showcasing the classic Parsi embroidery on an international platform, highlighting the significance of representing one's heritage in global arenas.
Manish Malhotra described the look as an exquisite fusion of armor, artistry, and ancestry, calling Poonawalla "The Empress of Indian Fashion." Her appearance at the Met Gala 2025 was not just a display of sartorial excellence but a celebration of cultural identity and craftsmanship.
