Who Are Anita Anand and Kamal Khera? The Indian-Origin Ministers in Canadian PM Carny's Cabinet

Anita Anand and Kamal Khera are two prominent Indian-origin politicians serving in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet. Anand holds the position of Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, while Khera serves as the Minister of Health.

Anita Anand

Anita Anand was born in 1967 in Kentville, Nova Scotia, to Indian parents who had immigrated to Canada. She pursued higher education in law and became a distinguished legal academic. Before entering politics, Anand was a professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, specializing in corporate governance and the regulation of capital markets. She also held the J.R. Kimber Chair in Investor Protection and Corporate Governance.

Anand began her political career in 2019 when she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Oakville. She has since held several significant cabinet positions, including Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Minister of National Defence. As Minister of National Defence, she was only the second woman in Canadian history to hold this position, after former Prime Minister Kim Campbell. In her current role as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, Anand focuses on advancing Canada's technological and scientific sectors.

Kamal Khera

Kamal Khera was born in Delhi, India, in 1989 and immigrated to Canada during her childhood. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York University in Toronto and worked as a registered nurse in the oncology department at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto before entering politics. Khera was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Brampton West in 2015, making her one of the youngest women ever elected to Canada's Parliament.

Throughout her political career, Khera has served in various roles, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, and Minister of Seniors. In her current position as Minister of Health, Khera brings her healthcare background to the forefront, aiming to address public health challenges and improve Canada's healthcare system.

Both Anand and Khera exemplify the growing diversity in Canadian politics and play vital roles in shaping policies that impact the nation's future.
