Pregnancy - signs and symptoms
Pregnancy - signs and symptoms
Pregnancy is the condition of carrying a developing embryo or fetus within the uterus. It typically lasts about 40 weeks, counted from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), and is divided into three trimesters.
Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy
Early Signs (First Few Weeks)
Missed Period – One of the most common and earliest signs.
Implantation Bleeding – Light spotting may occur when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterus.
Breast Changes – Tender, swollen, or sore breasts due to hormonal changes.
Fatigue – Increased levels of progesterone can cause excessive tiredness.
Frequent Urination – The body produces more blood, leading to increased kidney activity.
Nausea and Vomiting (Morning Sickness) – Can start as early as the second week, usually peaking around the 9th week.
Heightened Sense of Smell – Certain odors may suddenly seem overwhelming or unpleasant.
Food Cravings or Aversions – Sudden preferences or dislikes for certain foods.
Later Symptoms (Second and Third Trimester)
Weight Gain – Gradual increase in weight as the baby grows.
Abdominal Enlargement – The uterus expands, making the belly grow.
Back Pain – Increased weight and hormonal changes can cause discomfort.
Leg Cramps – Often occur due to circulatory changes.
Heartburn and Indigestion – Hormonal changes slow digestion.
Swelling (Edema) – Fluid retention may cause swelling in the feet, hands, and face.
Fetal Movements – Felt as early as 16-22 weeks, often described as fluttering or kicking.
While these symptoms are common, every pregnancy is different. If pregnancy is suspected, a home pregnancy test or a visit to a healthcare provider can confirm it.
