Early Life and Education
Born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, Rekha Gupta moved to Delhi at a young age. She pursued her education at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, where she earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. During her college years, she became actively involved in student politics, joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1992. Her leadership skills led her to serve as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. Furthering her education, she obtained a Master of Arts and a Master of Business Administration, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.
Political Career
Rekha Gupta's political career commenced with her election as a councillor from North Pitampura (Ward 54) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in 2007, a position she was re-elected to in 2012. She has held various significant roles within the BJP, including National Secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha from 2004 to 2006, General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha in 2009, and National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. In 2022, she was the BJP's mayoral candidate for the MCD elections. Her legislative career advanced with her election as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Shalimar Bagh constituency in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, where she defeated the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate by a margin of 29,595 votes.
Chief Minister of Delhi
On February 19, 2025, Rekha Gupta was elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party in Delhi, paving the way for her to become the Chief Minister. She is the fourth woman to hold this office in Delhi, following predecessors such as Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. Her appointment marks the BJP's return to power in Delhi after a 27-year hiatus. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Ramlila Maidan, with attendance expected from top BJP leaders and dignitaries.
Personal Life
Rekha Gupta is married to Manish Gupta, a businessman in the spare parts industry. The couple has two children: a son, Nikunj Gupta, who is currently pursuing his studies, and a daughter, Harshita Gupta, who assists in the family business.
